Psalm 1

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
    or stand around with sinners,
    or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
    bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.

Here the Psalmist describes the benefits available to those who delight in God’s word, and who meditate on it consistently.  The “Law of the Lord” refers to God’s Word–the Bible.  He also is describing the two paths that are open to us.  The path of life and the path of doom.  There are three benefits to those who take the path of life:

1.  They bear fruit consistently.

2.  They prosper in all they do.

3.  The Lord watches over their path.

Those on the other path do the following:

1.  They follow the advice of the wicked.

2.  They hang around sinners.

3.  They join in with the mockers.

Although it appears that wicked prosper, it is short lived, for they will be condemned at the judgment.

So I have a choice in how I will live, and there are consequences to my choice.  The one thing that makes the difference ini how I choose is that I delight in and meditate on God’s word.
